What concentration of hypochlorous acid should be used?
The concentration that should be used depends on the application. Within the concentration range of 20-30 ppm, it is very effective to disinfect foods such as fruits, vegetables, fish and seafood. The FDA allows the use of up to 60 ppm without the need to rinse after disinfection. It is also effective to disinfect food contact surfaces at 20-30 ppm, but the FDA allows concentrations up to 200 ppm. Water disinfection is effective at a concentration of 1-2 ppm, but EPA allows up to 4 ppm. When deciding which concentration to use, it is best to refer to research results. How to measure concentration?
Hypochlorous acid is measured with a standard test strip for measuring free chlorine in swimming pools. The test strip will turn a different purple to indicate that the concentration is between 10 and 200 ppm. For higher concentrations, the test solution can be diluted. (For example: 1000ppm solution can be diluted 1:10, and then the test strip reads 100ppm, indicating that the original solution is 1000ppm).
